A Challenging Adventure in South India: Pushpagiri, at 5,626 feet , is the highest peak in Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, located along the Western Ghats of Karnataka. It is located in Somwarpete taluk, 20 kilometres from Somwarpet in the northern part of Kodagu district on the tri-junction between Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Hassan district. I recently completed my 1st trek of the year 2024, Kumara Parvatha, a trek renowned as one of the most challenging in South India. Here's my review of this unforgettable experience.

Two routes: 1. Kukke - girigadde(Bhattara mane) - pushpagiri( Kumara parvatha ) 2. Somavarapete - beedalli - pushpagiri (Kumara parvatha). Route 1 is most challenging one with 14km one side and Route 2 is easier trail with 7km one side. If you are planning, prefer route 1 plan for 2 days and spend one night there it'll be an amazing experience. You can go through detailed map shown.

Charges: Please carry cash with you because you won't get network there to access digital payments. 150rs Per meal at Bhattara mane. 200rs per head for tent. 350rs trek charges + 75rs halting charges to be paid to forest department. 500rs deposit (refundable) at forest department for carrying plastics. Overall around 1800 per person.

Challenging Yet Rewarding : Kumara Parvatha is not for the faint-hearted. The trail is demanding, with steep ascents, rocky terrain, and breathtaking vistas. My previous trekking experience came in handy, but even so, this trek pushed me both physically and mentally. The sense of accomplishment at the summit is unparalleled.

Unpredictable Weather : Kumara Parvatha’s weather is always unexpected, but we were fortunate to enjoy clear skies. However, we were on time to reach Bhattara mane in the evening and saw the most beautiful sunset ever near the forest camp office. Nature's unpredictability adds an element of adventure to the journey.

A Lifesaver: Drinking Water : Access to drinking water at two key points, Bhima's Rock and nearby waterfall 2.5 km from the trek's starting point, made a significant difference. The second water source near Kallina Mantapa was especially crucial. Staying hydrated is a top priority during such a demanding trek.

Strict Safety Instructions : The trek leaders stern safety instructions may have bruised a few egos, but I believe it's better to have strict guidance. In challenging treks like Kumara Parvatha, safety is paramount. Following instructions is vital to prevent accidents and potential trek closures.

Essential Gear : Carrying 2-liter water bottles, a headlamp/torch, Cap, umbrella ( or raincoat) and snacks like dry fruits and energy drink is mandatory and wise. Such items proved valuable in dealing with unexpected delays, which are common on trekking expeditions. Avoid carrying more plastics ,junk food , prohibited items like drone, speaker, knife, matches, cigar, alcohol etc.

Not for Newbies : Kumara Parvatha is not suitable for beginners unless they are consistently fit and work out. The trail's difficulty level demands physical endurance and prior trekking experience.

A Memorable Experience : Despite the challenges, I thoroughly enjoyed the trek. The pristine beauty of the Western Ghats, the sense of accomplishment, and the promise of a return for the elusive sunset view make Kumara Parvatha a memorable adventure. In conclusion, Kumara Parvatha offers an exhilarating and demanding trekking experience, and it's one I look forward to repeating. While it's not for the faint-hearted, those who are well-prepared and willing to follow the trek leaders' guidance will find it to be an unforgettable journey in the heart of South India's stunning landscapes.
